India Smart Cities Award Contest (ISAC) 2022

  • The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has recently announced the winners of the India Smart Cities Award Contest (ISAC) 2022. 
  • This contest aims to recognise and reward outstanding practices and innovations in the Smart Cities Mission. 
  • The initiative received a significant response, with 845 nominations coming from 80 smart cities across India.

Key highlights of the announcement include:

Top Smart Cities: 

  • The city of Indore in Madhya Pradesh has secured the top spot as the best Smart City in India. 
  • It is followed by Surat in Gujarat and Agra in Uttar Pradesh. 
  • Indore's achievements span various categories such as urban mobility, solid waste management, water supply, sanitation, citizen engagement, social welfare, and urban governance.

State Rankings: 

  • Madhya Pradesh has been recognised as the leading state for its remarkable performance in the Smart Cities Mission. 
  • Notably, four cities from Madhya Pradesh—Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior, and Jabalpur—have won awards across different categories. 
  • Tamil Nadu stands as the second-best state, while Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh share the third rank.

Union Territory Excellence: 

  • Chandigarh has been honoured as the best Union Territory. 
  • The city's achievements encompass urban planning, green mobility, e-governance, smart education, and healthcare.

Award Categories: 

The ISAC 2022 awards were divided into six categories: 

  • Social Aspects, 
  • Governance, 
  • Culture and Economy, 
  • Urban Environment, 
  • Transportation and Mobility, and 
  • Water and Sanitation.

Jury Selection: 

  • An independent jury panel, composed of experts from various fields related to urban development, was responsible for selecting the winners.

Smart Cities Mission: 

  • The Smart Cities Mission, initiated in 2015, seeks to transform 100 cities in India into sustainable and livable urban centers. 
  • The mission prioritises citizen participation, technology integration, innovation, and convergence in urban development.

Inspiration and Impact: 

  • The ISAC awards play a vital role in highlighting success stories within the Smart Cities Mission. 
  • These awards encourage other cities to adopt and replicate the best practices in their own contexts. 
  • The overall goal is to foster a culture of excellence and innovation among smart cities, ultimately leading to an enhanced quality of life for their residents.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 27,  with President Droupadi Murmu felicitating the winners in Indore. The ISAC awards aim to celebrate the achievements of the Smart Cities Mission and inspire further progress in urban development across India.

Facts About ISAC :

  • The ISAC awards for 2022, organised under the Smart Cities Mission, by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs 
  • This is the fourth edition of the ISAC awards. In the past, the ISAC witnessed three editions in 2018, 2019 and 2020. The 2022 edition was launched in April last year during the ‘Smart Cities­Smart Urban­isation’ event in Surat.
  • There were no awards in 2021 because of the CO­ VID­19 pandemic.

Smart Cities are those that promote sustainable development and innovative ideas while fostering inclusivity, equity, safety, health and collaboration of all the sectors of governance, which ultimately lead to a better quality of life for the peopke living in the city.
